The Motivations of Malcontents Disruption is reinforcing to trolls.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/digital-world-real-world/202006/the-motivations-malcontents

The Motivations of Malcontents

Disruption is reinforcing to trolls.

Internet trolling can be thought of as a deliberate behaviour to produce conflict or distress, or both, by posting material that is discourteous, provocative, inflammatory, or intimidating. The prevalence of trolling behaviour is hard to estimate, but at least 1% of social media users have experienced this personally over the last year. This figure can be as high as 70%, depending on the study consulted, and the methods used to collect these data.

Trolling used to be conceptualised as an activity in which an individual was engaged, being targeted from one person usually to another; however, increasingly we are seeing a rise in what might be termed "societal trolling" — disruptive tactics targeted from one group to another, often in a political context.

The questions that arise are: Why is trolling done? Are the motivations the same in individual and societal trolling? Are there similarities between online trolling and mass-disruptive actions conducted in the real world?

There are many motivations for disruptive protest, including legitimate ones based on, for example, experienced oppression. However, do such potentially legitimate contexts of protest provide opportunities for others to engage in disruption for disruption’s sake, under the cover of mass anonymity; and are the motivations of these people similar to the online troll?

One study of political trolling found that a group with a known purpose to disrupt society would engage in both sides of any debate to polarise opinion and sow discontent. For example, the same organisation got involved in Twitter debates about the Black Lives Matter movement and the safety of vaccines, simultaneously supporting both sides of both debates. The tweets from the organisation were associated with particular accounts that fed into five broad categories: Right Troll, Left Troll, News Feed, Hashtag Gamer, and Fearmonger, employed to different ends.1

The evidence certainly suggests that trolling has moved beyond the individual, but are the underlying characteristics of "traditional" social media trolls, and the new breed of online political provocateurs, different? We should not assume that, just because somebody is political, they have different motivations than if they were non-political. To analyse the motivations, both the personality and the context need to be understood.

The personality of the online troll is quite straightforward — unpleasant, but understandable. In a sample of 733 individuals2, "primary psychopathy" but not "secondary psychopathy" predicted levels of trolling. That is to say, the internet troll was less impulsive, less neurotic, and less emotionally reactive (traits of secondary psychopathy), but was more callous, more manipulative, and more lacking in remorse (traits of primary psychopathy).

The troll was also able to predict, with alarming accuracy, what would emotionally hurt others, and felt none of their emotional experience (lack of empathy). The troll’s primary motivation was to cause, and enjoy, social mayhem.

A similar result was found in a study that pulled apart the characteristics of the psychopath, by assessing their "dark tetrad" traits3. It was found that psychopathy and sadism predicted trolling, but narcissism and Machiavellianism did not. This study also found that "negative social potency" (being reinforced by causing disruption) was associated both with the dark tetrad personality traits, and with online trolling. Those seeking negative social potency enjoyed psychologically and emotionally harming others, and achieved this by exerting a negative social influence and power.

article continues after advertisement

Such findings about personality traits replicate in the worlds of politics and political actions. Psychopathy and narcissism are associated with an interest in political matters (with narcissism also predicting a lack of knowledge about such matters). Both psychopathy and narcissism also predict engagement in politics: “Our results imply that individuals exhibiting higher levels of Narcissism are not only less knowledgeable but also more interested in politics and more likely to participate when given the opportunity.”4 Apparently, these are quite widespread political traits, as another study5 of a dataset of expert ratings of political candidates, competing across a large number of elections worldwide, found that around 25% of them could be termed "populists." These individuals scored low on agreeableness, and (somewhat disturbingly) low on emotional stability and conscientiousness. Also disturbingly, the populists had high scores for narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.

The personalities of online trolls, and those of some political activists, seem to be similar. The unanswered question is whether such political activists are not quite as committed to a particular viewpoint as they suggest, but are more committed to gaining the reinforcement that they need — which, if they are anything like the internet troll, is their joy in disrupting and distressing others.

The power of the context to allow this to occur can be seen in a further study of trolling6. An experiment simulated an online discussion, and the number of trolling posts was noted as a product of the context. In addition to personality, both negative mood, and exposure to witnessing trolling posts from others, increased the chances that an individual would become a troll — experiencing both factors together doubled this probability. Suggesting that when many people are behaving badly together, and they are in a low mood requiring bolstering, the psychopath or sadist will use anonymity to inflict distress on others. In a further large study, people whose identities were strongly connected with a particular position implied that they would commit violence in support of their views, but only those people with a callous, and manipulative, personality actually did exhibit destructive behaviour7.

This seems to be one of those rare areas where we know more about the motivations of the digital-world behaviour than we do of the real-world behaviour — online trolls are psychopathic and/or sadistic individuals, who like to inflict distress for their own ends (possibly because they are sad and low).

In the real world, political disruption offers the same contextual variables of anonymity, and exposure to a high number of examples of disruptive behaviour. We know that political trolls’ sole purpose is discord and division. We know many politicians have "dark" traits. But, we need to ask how many political agitators are motivated by the personal power and satisfaction that distressing others bring them — are they all trolls together?

NARCISSITIC PERSONALITY DISORDER = MALCONTENT

Narcissistic personality disorder - Symptoms and causes - Mayo Clinic

Overview

Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

A narcissistic personality disorder causes problems in many areas of life, such as relationships, work, school or financial affairs. People with narcissistic personality disorder may be generally unhappy and disappointed when they're not given the special favors or admiration they believe they deserve. They may find their relationships unfulfilling, and others may not enjoy being around them.

Treatment for narcissistic personality disorder centers around talk therapy (psychotherapy).

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and the severity of symptoms vary. People with the disorder can:

Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance

Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration

Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it

Exaggerate achievements and talents

Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate

Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people

Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior

Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations

Take advantage of others to get what they want

Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others

Be envious of others and believe others envy them

Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious

Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office

At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they perceive as criticism, and they can:

Become impatient or angry when they don't receive special treatment

Have significant interpersonal problems and easily feel slighted

React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior

Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior

Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change

Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection

Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability and humiliation

When to see a doctor

People with narcissistic personality disorder may not want to think that anything could be wrong, so they may be unlikely to seek treatment. If they do seek treatment, it's more likely to be for symptoms of depression, drug or alcohol use, or another mental health problem. But perceived insults to self-esteem may make it difficult to accept and follow through with treatment.

If you recognize aspects of your personality that are common to narcissistic personality disorder or you're feeling overwhelmed by sadness, consider reaching out to a trusted doctor or mental health provider. Getting the right treatment can help make your life more rewarding and enjoyable.

Causes

It's not known what causes narcissistic personality disorder. As with personality development and with other mental health disorders, the cause of narcissistic personality disorder is likely complex. Narcissistic personality disorder may be linked to:

Environment ― mismatches in parent-child relationships with either excessive adoration or excessive criticism that is poorly attuned to the child's experience

Genetics ― inherited characteristics

Neurobiology — the connection between the brain and behavior and thinking

Risk factors

Narcissistic personality disorder affects more males than females, and it often begins in the teens or early adulthood. Keep in mind that, although some children may show traits of narcissism, this may simply be typical of their age and doesn't mean they'll go on to develop narcissistic personality disorder.

Although the cause of narcissistic personality disorder isn't known, some researchers think that in biologically vulnerable children, parenting styles that are overprotective or neglectful may have an impact. Genetics and neurobiology also may play a role in development of narcissistic personality disorder.

Complications

Complications of narcissistic personality disorder, and other conditions that can occur along with it, can include:

Relationship difficulties

Problems at work or school

Depression and anxiety

Physical health problems

Drug or alcohol misuse

Suicidal thoughts or behavior

Prevention

Because the cause of narcissistic personality disorder is unknown, there's no known way to prevent the condition. However, it may help to:

Get treatment as soon as possible for childhood mental health problems

Participate in family therapy to learn healthy ways to communicate or to cope with conflicts or emotional distress

Attend parenting classes and seek guidance from therapists or social workers if needed

10 Signs He Is Not Putting Enough Effort Into Your Relationship

Everyone knows how to be nice and polite even the worst of killers and murderers don the sweet face look

Kirk said the guy acts real cocky after he masturbates

he saw a guy walking down the street

with an ass hole attitude

shrugging his shoulders

acting all high and mighty

like he doesn't give a rats rear about anyone but himself

kirk said he can tell the guy just jacked off

releasing hormones

so now he doesn't have to be nice and respectable

and polite, courteous and socialable

he already got what his body needed at the moment

so he is done with it and has no reason to be pleasant

but...

this is not the proper way to be

acting like a total jerk just because you

got satisfied

Taken for granted.. thinks you will always be there.. so they can be nasty as hell to you treat you like shit dirt

treat me like shit dirt cockroach worthless

because you can

because you feel entitled

and you can get by with it

and you treat others with respect to their face and like shit behind their back

you don't have to be nice to me

unless you want something from me

once you get it

you return to being the

son of a bitch

ass hole

dickhead

fuckhead

jerk asinine bastard  bass turd butt hole butt head

prick face

stingy selfish mean horrible

threatening assaulting

terrorizing

Quick fixes for selfish people who don't want to work on themselves or relationships

 Pornography

Fast food

anything already prepped, prepared

any thing you don't have to work for

these are

quick fixes for those who don't want to have a good relationship

are not interested in people skills

don't care about anyone but themselves

are selfish

Pay attention to how he acts when around an attractive female especially one he has not had sex with (yet)

Spoiling each holiday, each fun time activity is one of his traits.

He is only aware of what is in the immediate environment at the moment. Impulsive. Short tempered. Quick fuse.

He is only aware of what is in the immediate environment at the moment. Impulsive.
Short tempered. Quick fuse.

He takes advantage of whatever is there what happens to be laying around
any opportunity that he sees he grabs it right away.

He buys things that are premade. Dislikes anything that requires prepping,
preparing, putting things together for recipes.

He detests window shopping....wouldn't dream of it. Thinks he HAS to
buy something just because he entered a store. Doesn't like to just look
around for later. Has to have it NOW, whatever it is... be it an object,
a piece of food, sex,

He puts things away the closest most convenient without much regard to order

I was the focus of interest due to easy availability for sex only. Nothing else mattered
or matters about me. The being I am is totally not important
and unimportant to him at all.

I am disregarded as a separate unique human being with my own feelings, thoughts, emotions, wants, needs, desires....etcetera.  Literally told "I don't care what you

want, what you think. "

"Why would I do something I don't want to do?" he said again yesterday.
He refuses to do anything he dislikes and if he must do any thing at all he
does not like I never hear the end of it.

He fabricates, modifies words according to people around he thinks are looking or
listening and cares most about what strangers, neighbors, anyone other than me
thinks. Always thinks someone is watching.

My opinion is of no importance period. The media is most important takes top priority
just like what the neighbors think, anyone he doesn't live with he feigns respect for
their viewpoint, opinion but behind their back, behind everyone's back he
slams them calls them stupid totally disrespects all people's ALL except for
mike lindell and donald trump

"What do you WANT ME TO SAY?" frequently comes out of his mouth

 He is a flower smasher.

Serenity in me while watching others throw a fit is a real challenge.

If your mother beat you up then you will likely beat other people up as well as yourself

Insecure males who lack self confidence use the most porn because they want it and have a hard time getting it.

Insecure males who lack self confidence use the most porn because they want it and have a hard time getting it.

It is very difficult for them to keep a woman/female,
maintaining one person in a steady relationship.

They don't even know how to treat one woman right much less handle

countless hundreds or thousands of females they lust after in the pictures,

magazines, movies, books, whatever they are viewing.

They often brag upon themselves verbally, physically,

showing off ownership of things like cars, house, money, material possessions

and cannot even talk decent to the woman they are with, IF they even

have a woman at all.

They fantasize and dream about sex often frequently but can't

have a plain old decent conversation with anyone due to their

shattered ego.

they like to watch other people having sex

watch look spy on girls and lust after any one around or in sight

anywhere

focusing on a physical union of bodies is much easier than

developing good social skills where one

can talk to just about anyone without being selfish egotistical hateful

nasty pushy mean or any other negative behavior

Independence is in every being and must be expressed

Confident not cocky

 confidence is natural and real

people love to feel confident and love to be around confident people

cocky is fake and nobody likes it

Beauty is in every single atom. Individual expression is natural beauty

Insane jealousy is rampant. Grandma used to tell me this all the time. Beginning to understand and recognize behavior

This behavior is displayed anywhere and everywhere

Spouses/partners do it

Friends, family, neighbors, co workers,

People all over the world do this stuff

People can still be jealous even if you have a broken back twisted spine deformed body regardless of your age

I figured the jealousy would end a long time ago

I am 60 years old according to the year I was born

The emotions never end

In my mind no one should be jealous of anything about me

however I am taking note of behavior of people in my
personal life who say and do certain things which I have discovered
are direct indications of sheer jealousy.

The signs a woman is jealous of another woman aren't always easy to spot.

You might assume someone doesn't like you when in fact she's an insecure woman who's just jealous of you.

Calling someone out for acting on their jealousy is tricky. There's no assurance that the person will own up to their envy.

Here are 20 signs a woman is jealous of another woman.

RELATED: 9 Ways I Trained My Brain To Not Feel Jealousy Ever Again

1. She tries to be the center of attention when you're there.

You can tell that another woman is jealous of you if she tries to steal the spotlight whenever you're around.

Some people thrive on being the center of attention. If she has a strong personality, there is a chance she can't help it.

If she's groveling to be the center of attention, however, it could be a sign that she's jealous of you.

2. She's condescending towards you.

Jealous people often put others down in hopes to feel better about themselves.

Close friends should celebrate your successes and inspire you to make the most of your failures.

If she goes out of her way to make you feel bad, it could be because she feels threatened by your beauty, success, talent, and so on.

3. She downplays your success.

It’s normal to feel insecure, but when people feel the need to take it out on you, that’s where you should draw the line.

One of the other signs a woman is jealous of you is how she handles your successes.

If you get a promotion at work or have a wonderful first date, does she try to make it seem like it’s not that big of a deal?

4. She's happy when you fail.

You can tell that another girl is jealous of you if she seems happy when you fail.

When you tell her disappointing news, does her body language seem more at ease? If you get stood up on a date or break out into hives, does it seem like she’s taking pleasure in it?

5. She gossips about you behind your back.

Ah, gossip. Even if you try your hardest not to partake in it, you can never fully trust that others aren’t doing the same.

If you hear through the grapevine that she’s talking trash, it could be that she’s jealous of you.

Sometimes jealous people think that they can trash talk their jealousies away. Sorry, it just doesn’t work like that!

6. She copies you.

Does she copy your poetic voice, rip off your art, or try to mimic your style?

There’s a difference between drawing inspiration from someone you love and trying to imitate someone you treat badly.

If she truly disapproved of you, she wouldn’t think to copy you.

7. She says that you don't deserve anything good.

This one should be obvious. When a woman feels like you don’t deserve any happiness at all, there must be something else going on.

8. She brags about her successes.

You can spot jealous women by how much they brag about themselves.

If you’re secure, you don’t need to prove it. Least of all to your friends.

9. She avoids gatherings in your honor.

Let’s say you’re getting married or your BFFs are throwing a party for you to celebrate your promotion.

Does she always have a reason not to show up if something’s in your honor?

Pretending to be busy is a sign that a woman feels jealous of you.

10. She praises you when she can benefit from it.

Jealous people are more calculated than you’d like to believe.

Notice how she treats you in front of other people. If your professor compliments your paper in front of her, does she immediately start gushing?

Bashing you in a professional context would only reflect negatively on her, so she could be rallying to seem like a positive, secure person.

11. She drops hints on social media.

When in doubt, trust your social media accounts.

If someone is jealous of another woman, they might reveal their behavior online.

Do they constantly subtweet you, or intentionally bash things you love to get a rise out of you?

12. You're dating someone she used to have feelings for.

Unfortunately, romantic relationships can be a huge source of jealousy for some people.

She might feel jealous of you if you’re dating someone she had her eye on.

13. Or she is dating someone that used to have feelings for you.

In the reverse, she could feel jealous of you if you have a history with her current partner.

People tend to be jealous of another woman if they fear that their partner will leave them over it.

14. You've received more recognition in her field of study.

Do you both work in the same field? Have you received more fame or recognition in your career pursuits?

People feel insecure when they don’t have enough recognition. If that’s something you’ve had, it could be one of the many signs a woman feels jealous of you.

15. You have something she wants.

Ask yourself what this person’s life looks like.

Maybe she struggles to make new friends or was rejected from a university that you got a full-ride to.

People lash out at other people who have exactly what they want.

16. Your friends pick up on it.

Consult your female friends — or any friends for that matter — and ask them if they notice anything weird about her behavior.

If they pick up on the signs of female jealousy, it’s definitely not in your head.

17. They give backhanded compliments.

A secure person would not make fun of your hot selfies or give you backhanded compliments.

If someone is jealous of you, they take pleasure in your pain. Don’t let them do that.

Post the selfie anyway.

18. Anytime you speak, there's a look of disapproval in her eyes.

You know the look.

It’s almost like she writes off everything you’re about to say before you even say it.

You can tell if a female friend is jealous of you, or any friend regardless of their gender, if they get stiff when you talk.

19. She compares herself to you.

Does she measure her successes with yours?

If she can’t stop bringing up your achievements to downplay herself, that’s a sign she wishes she had what you have.

20. She admits that she's jealous of you.

Listen to people when they tell who you are.

If she jokingly admits that she’s jealous of you, it’s not a joke.

Proceed with caution.

RELATED: 3 Ways To Cure Jealousy From Within

There are a few things you can do if you think another woman is jealous of you.

1. Distance yourself from this person.

If you don’t have to see this person at work or live with this person, it might be beneficial to take some space from them.

You shouldn’t have to feel pressured into hiding your successes or playing dumb on purpose all so this person has a better day.

2. Spend more time with people who support you.

Distancing yourself from someone is a good opportunity to make genuine connections with other people.

Instead of focusing on the negatives, cherish the positives.

You’ve done yourself a favor by seeking out new relationships. Enjoy them!

3. Mute them on social media.

If you see them subtweeting you or trying to catch your attention on social media, just do yourself a favor and mute them.

Remember that this is a person who wants to see you spiral, so spiraling will only give them satisfaction.

4. Laugh with them

If they say something rude to you, just laugh at it. If you make light of it they’ll be confused or feel embarrassed for lashing out.

5. Avoid being vulnerable to this person

They’re just not going to be supportive of your successes. If your partner’s best friend or co-worker is jealous of you, you might not be able to escape their wrath as easily as you’d like.

You can, however, be more thoughtful about what you decided to reveal.

If you win a prize for your novel or get a promotion, you don’t have to consult them about it.

They might find out from other people, but it doesn’t have to be a topic of conversation between the two of you.
