Don't give things to people that they don't want.
Don't give them something you want. Just because you like
a particular thing doesn't mean the other person will like it.
If you want to give a gift, take the time to find out exactly what they like, what they need or truly want.
For many years I've said I'd rather have a dollar (or five!) for Christmas or
my birthday than a twenty dollar sweater I'm not going to wear.
Too often people give an unwanted gift then get angry at the recipient
and accuse them of being "ungrateful".
